The Way of the Shaman bonus story (after book 5) Not free, but worth the price in my opinion. Though you'll possibly need a DRM stripper first since DRM will prevent conversion.

Calibre is a free software that will allow you to convert any ebook format into any other format. Alternatively you can convert kindle format to your own. If you favor another format then you can paste the titles into your preferred format's webstore to see if they have a copy. All links are for Amazon.ca since I'm Canadian and favor the kindle format. I haven't read them all so I have minimal information on a lot of them. This is hardly new for escapist fiction, but some litRPG books can be rather heavy handed about it.īelow is a fairly comprehensive list of litRPG novels written in, or translated into, English. Two of the primary ways of judging a work's quality that are unique to litRPG are how reasonable the fictional game's mechanics are, and how believably the author bends them for and against the protagonist.įinally, it's worth mentioning that wish fulfillment is a staple of this genre. Use of interactive gaming language, such as the inclusion of various system messages, players' stats, items' characteristics, and other elements appreciated by gamers are common. The defining feature that sets litRPG fiction apart from other fiction that makes use of gaming and/or virtual reality is the focus on the fictional game's mechanics. Both have their pros and cons, and really depend on personal preference. Expect some series of unlikely events and/or a timeskip to catapult the main character's level up into the at least the thirty's very quickly. Russian style books on the other hand are all about the end-game, much like a lot of American MMORPGs these days. Don't expect the character of a Korean style litRPG book to hit double digit levels by the end of the first book. Korean style litRPG are all about the grind. There are two major schools of thought on it, the Korean one and the Russian one. One other thing I should mention about litRPG. Thankfully someone took a gamble and the better ones are starting to be translated into English, or at least the Russian ones are. It's popular in Korea, Russia, and to a lesser extent Japan but unfortunately this genre is basically unknown in the English speaking world. In a nutshell this genre is fiction about people: a) in Virtual Reality MMORPGs, trapped or otherwise (a la Sword Art Online), b) mysteriously transported into traditional MMORPG worlds (a la Log Horizon), c) transported into random fictional worlds that happen to run on vaguely RPG like rules, or d) the real world starts operating on RPG logic (a la The Gamer). Since I went to some effort to outline the genre and in a later PM form a fairly comprehensive list of existing works I thought I might make a thread here so others can share in the info. Frustratingly it's not officially recognized as an actual genre anywhere but Russia so finding good info on it is difficult.

The litRPG genre was recently brought up in the Copacetic thread over in Creative Writing and made me aware that Spacebattles doesn't have anything on this new genre. Just so I don't put someone's name on something they didn't intend please use this specific format so I know for sure you want your name on it. [ Note 2: I've been thinking about this for a bit, and rather than having the deciding factors for whether or not you're interested in one of the entries on my list being restricted to the amazon summary, amazon reviews, or my rather shallow bits of research I'm going to steal an idea from the Ranma fanfiction rec thread and include in each entry a list of Spacebattlers who like it or dislike it.
